MIJAS

Strolling the cobbled streets of Mijas is like walking around a film-set. The white-washed village, nestling on the mountainside, with flowers bursting from window boxes; shaded village squares; bustling cafes; and locals swapping news on elegant park benches, is how Hollywood might depict a typical Spanish village.

Climate

At 428 metres above sea level, the village of Mijas hugs the pine- . covered mountains of La Sierra de Mijas and surveys the Mediterranean below. This enviable geography is also partly responsible for the micro-climate. Average day-time temperatures for the year are 19 degrees, with the mountains and sea protecting the area from the blazing heat of the summers and the extremes of winter

Perhaps one of the most talked-about ways of seeing the area is the famous donkey taxis. Whether by "burros-taxi" or foot, those keen on exploring Mijas will often head to the Bull Ring, famous for its irregular oval shape; the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built originally by the Arabs in 836AD; as well as the elevated gardens. And wherever you are, the spectacular views down to the sea are breathtaking.

The municipality's 12 kilometre coastline offers small bays and large expanses of sandy shore line; and many display the Blue Flag.

With modern day facilities including an aqua-park; a race .course; a sports centre; arts centre; golf course; several museums; a library; and an open-air theatre, it is easy to see why so many foreigners now call Mijas "home;"

The Town Hall has an excellent Foreigners' Department which deals with any administrative issues for ex-pat residents. Not only that, but the Department organises an exciting array of cultural events throughout the year, including September's "Day of the Tourist;" a major multi-cultural festival in Spring; plus language, dance, sport and art activities.

Mijas has won the battle of retaining its traditional customs and laid back lifestyle, whilst becoming a thriving, modern arid increasingly cosmopolitan municipality.
