COSTA DEL SOL | MALAGA FLIGHT INFORMATION

costadelsol.airport

The air travellers who arrive at Malaga airport to enjoy the Easter holiday break and the processions at the end of March 2010, will be the first ones to use the newly inaugurated and long awaited third terminal.

The work of Bruce Fairbanks, a North American architect living in Spain emphasises the incredible light, which floods into the main hall, thanks to the walls of glass, supported on wire cables, a homage to the same light that inspired Picasso and which now greets the visitor on their arrival.

The height is also impressive, culminating in truncated 25 metre pyramids which cover the building. This construction has reduced the number of pillars giving the affect of a diaphanous space, as if you where in the open air, as the engineer responsible for the works describes it. The design is unique in the world and it will be possible to see birds flying in the interior:

The new building will allow Andalucia's principal airport to double its capacity. The terminal will have 250,000 sqm of ground space equipped with 86 check-in desks. There will also be businesses and services and restaurants of the highest level with chefs like Dani Garcia and designer shops of high quality. The idea says the airport director, Mario Otero, is to convert the space into a leisure area for the people of Malaga and visitors; who can pass the time without leaving the airport

Together with the existing two terminals, the airport will be able to handle 9,000 passengers per hour. The airport will also be us'ing state of the art systems to handle luggage. Interestingly, the same system which is used in Denver Airport in the States to carry skis, will be used here to carry Golf bags. The space that is known by . those responsible' for the project as the "Forum" is a grand covered public area, where all inter-hanges happen, where all the different forms of transport come together, including special facilities for those less mobile, _ an area that has been given special attention. Also in the Forum there are customer services, banks and chemists. The whole project is a new concept for an airport, no longer a depressing place for passengers en route, a place that only thinks about air travellers, but an attractive space that is for the use of all the public. There will also be a new train station, which will further improve the communication network, and should be ready in May, two months after the inauguration of the airport.

Growing all the time. The number of departure and arrival gates will increase to 20, which means that up' to 12 aircraft can be dealt with at anyone time with a further eight queued. This all means much easier access as all the passenger facilities on one level. The next step will see the incorporation of staff from AENA, the Spanish airport and air traffic controllers arm into the main airport, some 200 people

The airport is the fourth largest in Spain and in the top 30 in Europe. It records an average of 800;000 passengers each month and more than 8,000 flights. Thanks to the Malaga Plan (and together with initiatives to renovate the zone) a facility has been created that has the capacity to cope with further expansion over the coming decades.

As well as the terminal, the work is well advanced on the construction of a second runway, which will come into service in 2011 and double the capacity for take off and landings. At he same time the new train station and parking zones will tie completed.

The various accesses to the airport will also be undergoing considerable improvements in the coming months. Works are at present be carried out on the A- 7, Southern access and the Northern access will also be re-modelled with a connection from the second ring road. These works should be completed in 2010. Above all, Malaga and the Costa del Sol will have a modern airport, allowing them to face with confidence the development of . the province in the 21st century:
