Spain is by far the most popular destination for the 800,000 British people who have bought a second home abroad. According to recent research it is estimated that more than 5 million would buy abroad if they had the choice. Forty percent of these would rate Spain as their preferred location.
It is thought that the serious buyers come to view out of the peak holiday periods. The demand is highest in February and March and again in October and November, but of course there is also a steady interest throughout the rest of the year.
Property in Spain is no longer as cheap as it was. House prices have risen over recent years due to the demand for second homes and people relocating and retiring to the sun. A new build two bedroom apartment on the Costa del Sol that five or six years ago would have cost about £60,000 would now sell for the equivalent £200,000. This may be offset a little by low interest rates and a strong pound.
